Dear Friends in Christ,
There are many things in the Advent/Christmas season that compete for our attention and affection. One that grabs mine is the “Giving Tree” in the narthex of each of our churches. This is an important reminder that this season is not primarily about what we get for Christmas, but about what we give to the many people in our community who need our love and care. I encourage everyone, especially families with children, to make this Giving Tree practice a regular part of your Advent/Christmas observance.
As Catholics, our call to care for the poor and vulnerable in our society is always in collaboration with our brothers and sisters in the Archdiocese of Seattle. One of the most important ministries we share in Western Washington is the important work of Catholic Community Services, CCS. This weekend, we will hear from representatives from CCS who will describe the outreach they offer to the homeless, immigrants, and those dealing with poverty or other serious challenges to their dignity as children of God. Next to the state of Washington, CCS is the largest social service provider in our state.
More important than the information we will hear about CCS is the invitation to all of us to contribute to and support this important ministry, offered in the name of all Catholics to anyone who needs it. Many of you have received a mailing from CCS inviting you to make a gift. There will be envelopes in the pews to do the same for all who attend Mass this weekend.
