One constant presence at St. Bridget’s in our 54 years as a parish is that of a Catholic School. Although a private school, Villa Academy across the street has educated many of our children over the years. If you look in some of the early parish pictorial directories, you will see photos of the “Cabrini Sisters” as they were fondly known. Their memory reminds us that a saint of the church, Francis Xavier Cabrini who founded the school, once roamed the streets of Laurelhurst.
St. Bridget’s in 1994, signed an agreement with neighboring Assumption Parish, to co-sponsor what is now fondly known as ASB. Some 200 hundred Pre-k to 8th-grade students from St. Bridget’s attend the school, many of them serving at our Masses this weekend. The joint sponsorship of the school with our friends at Assumption has established a strong foundation upon which to rebuild parish life through the Partners in the Gospel plan that was publicly announced last weekend. Please check our parish website for more information about the plan.
January 29-February 4th is Catholic Schools Week, the themes this year are “Faith, Excellence, and Service.” Those are core values taught at ASB, Villa Academy, and other Catholic Schools in the area. They are important virtues we as a parish should be teaching all our children whichever school they attend. This means that the adult community of parents, family, and friends must continually be formed in Catholic faith and practice, to teach our kids by our example.
As Catholics, we participate in the larger community of our schools and increasingly with neighboring parishes. That in no way lessens the importance of gathering as a parish family to celebrate the ”Faith, Excellence, and Service” we share as a local faith community. We will do so in a special way on Saturday, February 4th, as we commemorate our St. Bridget of Kildare parish feast day. The regular 5:00 pm Saturday Mass will be followed by a special social from 6:00-8:00 pm. Adult beverages and soft drinks along with snacks will be served. Plan to join us and bring family and friends. All are welcome!
St. Bridget of Kildare…pray for us! Live Jesus in our hearts…forever!
