Sir Isaac Newton once said, “If I can see farther it’s because I stand on the shoulders of giants.” What a fitting perspective as the church once again approaches the great celebration of All Saints Day on Tuesday, Nov. 1. These “Friends of God” as St. Thomas Aquinas described them, encourage us to make growth in Christian love our primary goal in life. Our challenge is to remember that in the midst of the many competing needs and values that clamor for our attention, especially as the “Holiday Season” commences earlier each year. All the more reason why the church makes All Saints Day a holy day of obligation. We will gather for Mass this Tuesday, November 1, at 6:30 pm. Please join us!
Our time of sacred memory continues with the commemoration of “All Souls” onWednesday, Nov. 2. We recall that every single soul who has ever lived and died matters to God and is loved forever by God. It is a natural time for us to remember our own beloved dead, especially those who have passed this year. We will gather to celebrate All Souls at our usual Wednesday 6:30 pm Mass. You are also invited to write in our “Book of Remembrance” the names of those you would like us to pray for at all our Masses in November.
The giant souls in life are those whose examples inspire us to grow in faith, hope, and love. One of the ways we do that is by our stewardship of the time, talent, and treasure God gives us to share. Thanks to all of you who have made a stewardship pledge of your treasure in the coming calendar year. We continue with our “Season of Thanks” campaign for the next three weeks and I encourage everyone to participate. A gentle reminder once again, that stewardship is not so much a program to raise money for the parish, but rather an opportunity to demonstrate our thanks for all God’s blessings, and our trust in his continued providence.
Remember the example of the dear souls of Walter and Elizabeth. All you holy men and women…pray for us! Live Jesus in our hearts…forever!
