Dear Friends in Christ,
We have sadly seen another increase in gun violence in recent weeks that has led to more tragic deaths. The most recent one was a well-known political activist, a young man with a wife and two small children. His controversial views have led to a firestorm of divisive rhetoric on both extremes of the political spectrum, yet another indication of the deep divisions in our country. At times like this, as Catholics, we must strive to come together to promote reconciliation and unity. One of the ways we do that is to acknowledge the good things also happening in our midst, and to celebrate them for the positive gifts they offer us.
Two positive things occurred last weekend, the first being the celebration at Mass of the leadership role of women in the life of our church, through our observance of St. Phoebe Day. The highlight of those celebrations was the heartfelt reflections that three high school girls offered on the word of God we shared. Their presence and words remind us of the gifts our young people have to offer, both within the church and in our broader society. The three students who spoke come from families who cherish their Catholic Faith and seek to integrate it into all aspects of their lives. The family is the “Domestic Church” as the Second Vatican Council teaches.
Speaking of family, the other positive to acknowledge is the all-parish “Family Reunion Barbecue” which took place at OLL. Mother Nature held off the rain, and a good time was had by all who came. It was wonderful to see folks, young and old, from all four of our parishes gather to share our fellowship as Catholics in Northeast Seattle. We will look to make this a regular part of the faith, hope, and love we share as we become a single parish community. Let us try to remember that what unites us is always greater than what divides us. This can be a source of comfort and strength to share in the difficult times in which we live.
Blessings of peace,
Fr. William Heric, Pastor,
